Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure May 19

With exceptional visibility, sunshine and blue skies, the Ocean Magic left the harbour and headed south east toward Hein Bank. Capt Gord , and crew members, Mika, Liz and Brandon made this a special trip for our guests on board, sharing a wealth of knowledge of the marine life to be found in these rich, cold waters. We were able to find a Minke whale, a Baleen whale, off San Juan Island busy foraging below the surface for schooling fish. Bird life was plentiful and could be seen above the surface where bait balls gathered. Gulls, Common Murres, and Rhinoceros Auklets congregated in large numbers. A pair of White-winged Scoters and three Black Oystercatchers added more bird views near Chatham and Discovery Islands. A visit to Whale rock provided good looks at lounging Harbour Seals and swimming Steller Sea Lions. Mt.Baker, in Washington State, rose majestically on the horizon. A good dose of sunshine and wildlife viewing is what Prince of Whales provided today and we weren’t disappointed. Marie ‘Orca-Magic’

Our Skipper Anna took our passenegrs out into the Strait of Juan De Fuca to a report, from one of our Zodiacs, of Humpback Whales. We arrived on scene to view three Humpbacks, with another three close by. With a total of six Humpback Whales to view it was hard to tell where to look. These gentle giants would raise their tails each time for a deep dive, such gracefull animals. Our trip then took a tour fo the world famous Race Rocks Ecological reserve. Here we took in the sights of Stellar Sealions, California Sea Lions, Harbour Seals and even a Bald Eagle. This was yet another wonderful marine wildlife tour by Prince of Whales! Today may have started dark and wet, but once out on the water the rain stopped and the sun came out. Our Skipper Anna took us west to Race Rocks where we were on scene with a SUPER POD. The Orca from all three resident pods, J K and L were headed east. The Killer Whales were everywhere you looked, just an amazing sight. There was spy hops, breaching and tail slaps. Just a truly amazing sight to watch these magnificent whales swim past. Our trip then took us east to view a pair of Humpback Whales. This was a mother and calf, swimming side by side. With our engines off we could all hear the whales as the broke the surface and took in their air. As we headed back into Victoria, we are all smiles after another great wildlife adventure with Prince of Whales! Clint “Orcawizard”

Our Friday Ocean Magic Adventure was simply amazing. Our Skipper Gord slipped the Ocean Magic out of Victoria’s inner harbour and out into the Strait Of Juan De Fuca. Here just a few miles from Victoria we were on scene with Transient Killer Whales. This group of six whales were milling around in the one area. As we took in the view we had to reposition as a large freighter worked by us. Once it had past the one male Orca started surfing in the wave created by the freighter. He surfed in the wave with his large dorsal fin ripping the water and leaving a great spray. Then he breached clear of the wave twice. Simply spectacular! This was my first time seeing a Transient Orca surfing in a wave, it was amazing. After viewing this group of six Killer Whales we headed through Race Rocks Ecological Reserve. Here the Stellar Sea Lions were everywhere, on the rocks, in the water. We also viewed California Sea Lions and Harbour Seals. Our adventure then took us to view a Humpback Whale. This gentle giant was leisurely swimming though some kelp in a tideline. It was rolling and playing in the kelp, and could even be seen swimming underwater. Our crew of Mika and Dan filled out passengers with information on the different whale species and marine environment of our amazing west coast waters. Yet another truly awesome adventure with Prince of Whales! Clint “Orcawizard”

Our Skipper Anna, slipped the Ocean Magic II out of Victoria’s inner harbour and out past the breakwater in search of marine wildlife. Our trip took us east along the waterfront past Trial Island and onto Discovery Island. Here just off the shoreline Jeff spotted a Grey Whale. This whale has been in our area all summer, working the shallow water along the shoreline for its food. Our trip then continued on out into Haro Strait. Here we took in the amazing sight of the largest grouping of Harbour Porpoise and Dall’s Porpoise I have ever seen. These sleek fast swimmers were working the water all around the Ocean Magic, and we shut down and drifted as we took in the sight of these feeding mammals. Then Mika spotted a Minkie Whale, and we were soon in perfect position to view this magnificent whale. It would raise its head free of the water for a breath, then slip back down below the water. This was yet another great Marine Wildlife Adventure with Prince Of Whales. Clint “Orcawizard”
